The Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Transplant Medicine at Essen University Hospital is a gastroenterology center of maximum care. The entire spectrum of gastroenterology and hepatology is covered; in the endoscopic department, approximately 10,000 examinations are performed annually. Specialized consultations exist for liver and biliary tract diseases, chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, and gastroenterological tumors. A large proportion of patients are referred from hospitals or practicing physicians, including an increasing number of patients for evaluation for liver transplantation.
